Creating a Community During the Holiday Season

In light of the holiday season, we were inspired to do something BIGGER and BETTER than ever at Garfield Heights Middle School – a holiday feast! The menu included turkey & gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, cinnamon baked apples, locally made sugar cookies, and a honey wheat roll.

But, with the help of the ambitious food service staff & key players in the building, we were able to take it one step further to create an atmosphere that even the biggest Scrooge would enjoy. The Netflix fireplace, Christmas Carols, and holiday table settings caught the eye of students and teachers alike as they entered the cafeteria.

While the focus was to provide the students with a holiday send off before break, we also wanted to use this as an opportunity to show our thanks and appreciation to the middle school staff as well by offering a free meal. As a result of the sweeping changes in the food service program, teachers and faculty are involved now more than ever, whether that means clicking at the breakfast carts each morning, handing out snacks after school, or just showing their support by buying from the salad bar each week.

We have been able to use food service as a platform to create a shared sense of community between the staff in this building, which allows us to collectively do better for the kids in

our district. We value the progress we’ve made and look forward to the continued partnerships with teachers and faculty in the future!
